Deskware was born out of a desire to simplify and organize the workspace. Traditional desk items such as pencil stands, business card holders, and sorting boxes often clutter the workspace rather than streamline it. Lee's solution was to integrate these items into the desk itself, using 3D printing technology to create a customizable, integrated design.
The unique properties of Deskware lie in its standardized unit base, which allows users to select and design items, change their positions, and even share 3D models of their items with others. The desk also features holes for electronic wires and poles for items that require stable support, such as bookshelves.
The desk is made from white oak and walnut, while the items are printed from Polylactic acid (PLA), a biodegradable and bioactive thermoplastic derived from renewable resources. The desk measures 1800mm x 740mm x 1230mm when the extendable table and light stand are included, and 1400mm x 740mm x 710mm for the desk alone.
The design process involved extensive research and prototyping. Lee used Styrofoam to create prototypes and refined the design by testing various market-available items. The final design unitizes the items to a size of 140mm x 140mm x 20mm, ensuring scalability, stability, and universal design.
Despite the challenges faced during the design process, such as finding the optimal desk layout and the slow speed of 3D printing, Deskware has been recognized for its innovative approach to workspace design. The design was produced in Korea from April to August 2018 and has since won the Korea Furniture Design Competition and been exhibited at the Korea International Furniture Exhibition.
Deskware is not just a desk, but a revolution in workspace design. It is a testament to the power of 3D printing technology and the potential it holds for creating customizable, functional, and aesthetically pleasing products. With Deskware, the workspace is no longer a place of clutter, but a place of creativity and innovation.
